"The Sweet Letting Go" by Mary Ernie O'Dell

This is without a doubt the best story I've read in a long time!  I couldn't put it down (and didn't, except to take nourishment and go to the bathroom).  Reward yourself with the pleasure of its company -- you'll remember Jess and Ren long after the last page is turned.
